Melrose: Lori & Us

A little ways up the I-49, just outside Natchitoches (where Steel Magnolias was filmed), we reach Melrose plantation. Although less ostentatious than many of the plantation homes we pass, it has a fascinating history. It was once home to Marie Thérèze Coincoin, a slave who was rented by a Frenchman whom she bore 10 children. Coincoin would eventually be freed and given land and went on to purchase the freedom of her children.

Another famous Afro-American former resident is Clementine Hunter. She painted murals on the walls of the African House, in the grounds of Melrose. Her paintings are described by our guide as "primitive art", although books on her tend to use the less racially charged "folk art". They depict scenes from plantation life such as cotton picking, church going and funerals.

Part way through the tour our guide asks the group if we recognise her. When a hushed, non-committal murmurring suggests a negative response, we are prompted a little more. "Y'all saw Steel Magnolias?" she asks. Well no, I havent as it happens but most of the group have and still seem none the wiser. It turns out that our guide is none other that Lori Tate, who apparently played Mrs. Latcherie Sr. in the movie. Being suddenly in awe of this local celebrity we decide this a photo oppotunity we cannot pass up.

At the end of the tour, quite unsolicited, we are given an autograph by Lori who has been a wonderful guide.

After our tour we head into pretty Natchitoches to spend the night, before heading over to Natchez, Mississippi.
